The Maharaja celebrates his Tithi or Indian birthday with traditional pomp
and ceremony. The exact date ascertained by the lunar calendar, it is a long and
busy day. Early morning visits to the temples in the Mehrangarh Fort and the
ancestral cenotaphs at Jaswant Thada; a formal Durbar for family, clansmen,
nobles and prominent citizens at Umaid Bhawan Palace where the aforesaid pay
their respects with the customary nazar or tribute; a luncheon for senior
government and defense officials and finally in the evening, a traditional
Mehfil where the ladies of the family, led by the Maharani herself, dance the
famous Ghoomar for the Maharaja. ( In December or January, the exact date
ascertained by the lunar calendar.) |
